Momo Sushi Shack
Back to one of my old favourite haunts, the incredible Momo Sushi Shack in Bushwick! Usually I like to get their udon, but I had been dying to try their tofu salad - pressed tofu, avocado, heirloom tomatoes from greenage farms, tomato and basil-infused soy sauce. I expected a tiny salad and got this plate of deliciousness! I highly recommend it. The tofu is pillowy and soft, the avocado was perfect, the greens were gorgeous and the basil-infused soy sauce was a beautiful touch. We also got vegetable tempura [not pictured] - which was very good, especially the different kinds of mushrooms, and I got a kitade doko roll - crimini + shittake cooked in sweet soy sauce with avocado, which was also very good. As always, can’t wait to go back!
Momo Sushi Shack is located at 43 Bogart Street off the Morgan stop on the L train.
Oriole 9
My mom and I took a trip to Woodstock recently and decided to have brunch at the wonderful Oriole 9. The place was really cool in general - Candy Chang’s “Before I die” was installed there and the tables were mismatched. Service was a bit spotty, but the food was worth it and they had tasty soy cappuccinos as well.
I got the above tofu hash with spinach, mushrooms and roasted red peppers served with garlic toast and salad. Yum.
Desmond in Albany, NY accommodating my vegan plate with rice, olives, artichoke hearts and roasted tomatoes. The zucchini was inedible and the rice was bland but, good effort [?]
Souen
My (omni!) coworkers have been raving about Souen lately, so I figured it was time to check it out for myself. With my baby cousin in tow, we arrived at a darling little spot in Soho.
Souen serves macrobioticfood. When anyone asks me what that is, I say it’s just better for you. The wikipedia definition, however, is “a dietary regimen which involves eating grains as a staple food supplemented with other foodstuffs such as local vegetables, avoiding the use of highly processed or refined foods and most animal products.” In case you are wondering.
I got a squash tofu plate, pictured above, which was sauteed tofu, squash, onion, carrot, nappa green, broccoli and snow peas in miso tahni sauce. So simple, comforting and delicious - especially served with brown rice that soaked up the rest of my sauce. Food was moderately priced and service good enough - nothing to rave about - but the people watching was divine! My cousin got the staple macrobiotic plate, which she said we superb. I heard the Union Square location is a bit better, so I’ll try going there next time!
Can’t wait.
Souen is located at 210 Sixth Ave at Prince St.
Hi friends!
Here’s a brain-dump of all good things:
WOOO HOOO HAVE A FUN VEGAN LIFE
Westville
I’ve been dying to go to Westville forever. The restaurant always has a sign out front that is essentially a list of a fresh vegetables they’ll be preparing.
I got a Market Plate, comprised of four different vegetable sides. It was fabulous. The sauteed tomatoes and broccoli really stood out on my dish.
My friend Andrew got some sort of egg-dish, which was very beautiful.
They have vegan hot dogs there, so naturally I’m quite excited to go back this summer, many times I hope!
Westville is located at 210 W10th Street, between Bleecker + W4th Street. They also have locations in the East Village and Chelsea. I suggest taking the 1 train to Christopher Street to get there.
Caravan of Dreams
Last night, I had the good fortune of going to Caravan of Dreams. The meal started with two small, fresh pieces of radish (seriously tasted like it came straight from the garden) covered in olive oil and salt - mmmm, and then tried the ravioli special of the evening - mushroom ravioli with port wine marinara sauce, leafy greens sauteed in garlic and olive oil with a sliced avocado on top. What a treat! The sauce was rustic and delicious, the greens spectacular and everything came together beautifully with the avocado.
I also enjoyed a glass of the special sangria of the evening - pear - and finished the meal with french-press coffee (which yielded about two cups - kept me awake through a midnight viewing of the Shining) and the house cashew milk.
Fantastic meal, lovely evening.
Caravan of Dreams is located at 405 6th Street, off of 1st Avenue.
I have been meaning to go to Wild Ginger for a long time now, especially after reading stellar reviews of it and always spying it on wanders through Williamsburg. Finally, I got a chance to go on Friday with my lovely booboo Kai.
We actually had a strange evening, first meeting in Greenpoint where we attempted a visit to Brooklyn Mac. Sadly, we were not aware that Brooklyn Mac was merely a takeout spot with a couple of benches, and we had been really looking forward to a sit-down meal, possibly with wine.
So we used the power of my iPhone to look up other vegan eateries in Greenpoint, and came across the highly rated Paulie Gee’s, which looked and smelled amazing…and had an hour and a half wait. If only it was nicer out, and we could have waited…alas, in the cold, we wanted to sit down right away. I would love to make a reservation and come back here for dinner another day, looked like it would be a great date choice (sadly I’ve only dated omnivores, which is always an interesting experience and I’ll totally make another post about this another day…before going vegan I was a pescetarian for two years and vegetarian for three+ years before that…honestly I don’t even remember when I went veg as a teen…ooh, another post idea).
Another twenty-minute walk later and we ended up at Wild Ginger. I didn’t take any photos, but I got the Tom Yum Ramen which was great! I’ve been in the mood for Tom Yum ALL the time lately. The tomatoes were kind of huge and scary in the soup so I avoided them, and I would have loved some straw mushrooms, as have come in other tom yum soups I have had, but it really hit the spot at a totally acceptable price (9$). My darling Kai got the udon, which was delicious - wonderful broth, great noodles! Both dishes were nourishing and pleasing to both the eye and stomach, a yummy comforting meal. The service was also excellent - we were in and out! The eatery had a very relaxing atmosphere and was full but not totally packed.
The menu was great, especially the appetizer list - I would love to come back and try a few appetizers with a group of friends, have a tapas-style meal! I actually have a secret fantasy of snagging at table at the Brooklyn Brewery, playing stupid board games all day, and having Wild Ginger delivered for linner.
