I'm a Bushwick-based vegan navigating NYC eateries and grocery shops. I cook too.

Steamed bok choy, raw onion, shittake mushrooms, teriyaki baked tofu and snap peas with hemp and sesame seeds in a sesame oil- rice vinegar - soy sauce - sriracha dressing.

My lunch from today at work: brown/white rice, steamed zucchini/baby bok choy and shittake mushrooms topped with some nacho cheeze flavored Brad’s kale chip
Crumbs which were totally amazing and someone just left on the counter for everyone to share. Yum! Loved it topped with soy sauce and sriracha.

Brooklyn Wok Shop

Switching it up from my adventures with Joelle, I went to a delightful new Williamsburg eatery last night.  Brooklyn Wok Shop is currently in a “soft” opening phase, with a limited menu but one that clearly denotes vegan options. Any eatery that does this is a friend of mine, so Shelly accompanied me last night to try it out.

For my main dish, I had the Market Vegetable Soup with soy-garlic broth and rice noodles. The vegetables in it were super interesting - a delicious winter melon (totally delightful), green beans, scallions and bok choy. I enjoyed the soup, though it could have been more flavorful - I like everything spicy! I did add in some sriacha - yum.

I also had a side of baby bok choy, which was quite good. Bok choy was very fresh! I did add a little soy sauce and sriacha, and I really did not need the side as there was bok choy in the soup as well, but I am glad I ordered it to taste.

Though Shelly ordered a chicken dish, I was comforted to know that the chicken was hormone and antibiotic-free.

The decor was cute (check out the third picture to see the wall), the service was friendly and you ordered at the front, then received a number and your food was brought to you. I love places like this. Condiments were self-serve and you didn’t have to tip. The bathroom was delightfully clean, and there weren’t a lot of people there - which I like. It was kind of off the beaten path of Williamsburg, but totally worth a trip.

They will also be serving a dim sum menu in the near future as well and if they offer plentiful vegan options, I will be testing it out for sure. For now, I would go back for the yummy soup. They also serve beer, which is always a plus in my book!

Brooklyn Wok Shop is located at 182 N 10th Street off the Bedford L train.
